When Life Changes

When life changes in ways you didn’t expect, it’s easy to feel lost, but sometimes being between chapters is where you begin to discover what comes next.

Choice?

Sometimes life changes because you choose it. Other times, the change chooses you. Maybe you lost your job. Maybe your marriage ended. Maybe your kids have left home and the house suddenly feels a lot quieter. Maybe you’ve decided to go back to school, start over, or take a path you never expected to be on. Whatever the circumstances, transition can leave you feeling like the ground beneath you has shifted.

Uncertainty

For many men, that uncertainty can be uncomfortable. You may be used to being the one who has a plan, solves problems, provides, or keeps things moving. But some seasons of life don’t come with a clear plan. There may not be a problem you can simply work harder to fix. Sometimes, you’re being asked to sit with uncertainty while you figure out what comes next. That doesn’t mean you’re failing.

Sense of Loss

A difficult transition can bring grief, even when the change is ultimately positive. You might miss the routine, the role you had, the relationships you expected to last, or the version of yourself that felt more certain about where you were headed. It’s okay to acknowledge that something has been lost while still believing there may be something worthwhile ahead.

One Step Forward

You also don’t need to figure out the rest of your life right now. When everything feels uncertain, it can help to shrink the timeframe. Instead of asking, “What am I going to do with my life?” ask, “What do I need to do this week?” Take care of the basics. Get outside. Stay connected with people who matter. Keep some structure in your days. Do something that reminds you that you are more than your job, your marriage, your role as a parent, or any other title you’ve carried.

Feeling Lost

Be careful not to confuse uncertainty with being lost. You are allowed to be in between. In between jobs. In between identities. In between chapters. In between what your life was and what it will become.
You may not recognize yourself in this season, which can be unsettling; however, it can also be an opportunity to ask some important questions: What matters to me now? What do I want to carry forward? What am I ready to let go of? Who do I want to become?

Clarity in Time

You don’t have to have all the answers today. Sometimes the next chapter begins simply by taking the next step. If the transition feels too heavy to navigate alone, reaching out for support isn’t a sign that you can’t handle it. Sometimes having someone alongside you can make it easier to find your footing again.

You haven’t necessarily lost your way. You may simply be finding a new one.
